Eagles Put League-High Three on Academic All-MAC Squad

Corey Chaffins, Kendall Lewis and Zack Leonard represent EMU on Academic All-MAC team

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team placed a league-high three players on the 2010Academic All-Mid-American Conference team which includes Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London), Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and Kendall Lewis (Huntsville, Ohio-Indian Lake), announced by the conference office Tuesday, June 29.

Chaffins recorded a 3.42 GPA in biology and earned his second Academic All-MAC honor. He adds to it an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV second-team honor as well. The native of New London, Ohio finished the season with a 4-6 record and a 6.04 ERA, leading the league with 96 strikeouts, 104.1 innings pitched and five complete games. He was twice named MAC West Pitcher of the Week after striking out eight in each performance of a 3-1 win over No. 25 Kansas and a 10-8 win over Jacksonville State.

Leonard added his second straight Academic All-MAC award after posting a 3.73 GPA in exercise science. The native of Canton, Ohio started all 59 games for the Eagles, batting .306 with a team-best 70 hits and 53 RBI. He hit safely in all four of EMU's MAC Tournament games to extend his overall MAC Tournament hitting streak to 12 games. Leonard also earned MAC West Player of the Week honors March 11, after going 11-for-23 at the plate in five games, recording five doubles and one home run to go along with four runs scored and 12 RBI.

Lewis turned in a 3.39 GPA in chemistry for his first Academic All-MAC selection. The native of Huntsville, Ohio pitched a remarkable 11-inning complete game shutout against Western Michigan April 24, earning him “Louisville Slugger” National Player of the Week, NBCBWA National Pitcher of the Week and a slew of additional honors as well. He posted a 7-4 record with a 4.21 ERA in 83.1 innings pitched this season, going seven or more innings in six of his 14 starts.
