EMU Advances 12 Swimmers Through to Day Two Finals

The Eagles will look to add to their lead tonight as they put seven swimmers in tongiht's finals at Jones Natatorium

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team advanced 12 swimmers through to the finals tonight in five events on day two at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championships at Michael H. Jones Natatorium Friday, March 5, in Ypsilanti, Mich. Finals will commence at 7 p.m.
Jacob Hanson, who set a record in the 200 IM and gave EMU its first MAC Champion of the meet Thursday night, advanced through to the finals in the 400 IM, turning in a prelim-best and B-cut time of 3:54.73. Troy Esentan also swam through to the finals with the third-best prelim time of 3:57.19 while Tyler Capen's time of 4:02.36 was good for seventh in the prelims and will also advance to the finals. Connor Christie will compete in the consolation championship final this evening.
In the 100 butterfly prelims, Justin Griggs turned in the fastest time of 48.62 and was just 18-hundredths off of setting the EMU record, which is currently held by Ryan Fulkerson (48.44). Owen Grey qualified in fifth place with a time of 49.81, giving EMU two championship finals participants for tonight. Michael Kinross (50.49) and Alan Duski (51.02) will compete in the consolation final this evening.
EMU saw Keith Coghlan advance in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.58, good for seventh as he will move on with the top-eight to the championship finals tonight.
The Eagles advanced four into the championship finals and five overall in the 100 breaststroke. Scott Murphy finished first in his heat and second overall in the prelims with a time of 55.90. Sam Dolato, Matt Lifka and Doug Brooks also moved on to compete in the championship final while Connor Christie will swim in the consolation final tonight.
In the final swimming prelim of the day, the 100 backstroke, Duski was the lone Eagle to move on to the championship finals with a time of 50.93. Turning in a MAC, meet and pool record time of 47.78 was Roko Simunic of Missouri State.
Finals are set to begin at 7 p.m. today at the Michael H. Jones Natatorium on the campus of EMU.
