Five Eagles win first dual match of the season in road victory

GREENSBURG, Pa. (EMUEAGLES.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team kicked-off 2010 in decisive fashion Friday evening, Jan. 8, with a 30-9 win over Division II opponent Seton Hill University. Five Eagles, sophomores Jordan McGuire (Miamisburg, Ohio-Miamisburg), Lester France (Flatrock, Mich.-Flatrock CC), and Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison), as well as freshmen Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) and Travis Stanback (Solon, Ohio-Solon), each won their first regular season matches of the year.

The Eagles improve to 4-3-1 on the season while the Griffins fall to 5-8.

Seton Hill got on the board first at 125 lbs. as Kenny Trumbetta posted a 6-0 shutout decision over true freshman Greg Egbert (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Ypsilanti) to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead. At 133 lbs. McGuire put the Eagles ahead, 4-3, with a 9-0 major decision shutout over Josh Testa. Pennsylvania native senior David Pienaar (Trafford, Pa.-Greensburg Catholic Central) made it two consecutive wins for EMU with an 8-4 decision over Dallas Evans at 141 lbs.

Trailing 7-3, SHU cut the Eagle lead to one when Kurt McCamley bested senior Cody Hier (Davidson, Mich.-Davidson) 4-2 in Hier's first dual match of the season at 149 lbs. The Green and White responded with three straight victories to put a 22-6 stranglehold on the Griffins.

At 157 lbs., France notched five team points with a convincing 20-4 technical fall against Josh Voelker. Ortman followed with a pin of Logan Downes at the 3:44 mark of the 165 lbs. match. Finally, junior Nick Hendrick (Columbiaville, Mich.-Powers Catholic) topped Lewis Spadaro to the tune of a 14-6 major decision at 174 lbs.

At 184 lbs., the Griffins tallied their final three points of the evening as true freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) surrendered a 9-5 decision to Nick Padezan to make the score 22-9. However, EMU would end the match strong as Stanback knocked-off Greg Vanucci, 7-1, at 197 lbs. and Schroeder flattened Pat McClure by technical fall, 15-0, in the heavyweight bout to put the final score at 30-9 for the visiting Eagles.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround as they head to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Pitt Quad Saturday, Jan. 9, beginning at 10 a.m. Awaiting EMU will be Columbia University, No. 25 ranked University of Pittsburgh and Waynesburg University.
