OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team came up short in a Mid-American Conference dual meet at Miami University Saturday afternoon, Jan. 30. The Eagles were bested by the RedHawks by a score of 171-129 at Nixon Aquatic Center.

Despite the loss, which dropped EMU to 5-5 overall, 3-3 in MAC dual meets, there were a few bright spots on the day. After two second place finishes in their meet with Ball State a week ago, sophomore Samantha Partridge turned those into three first place marks on Saturday in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events as well as the 400-yard free relay. In the latter, the Eagles turned in a time of 3:31.52 to edge Miami (3:32.38) by less than a second.

Freshmen Briana Emig and Wesley Blassneck placed 1-2 in the 1,650-yard freestyle with Emig touching the wall in a time of 17:11.54. Sarah Maraskine took home wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke with a time of 56.90 in the 100, which ranks as the third-fastest time in the MAC this year.

With a time of 51.71, Sarah Kowalski won the 100-yard freestyle while Danielle Hulvey captured a victory in the three-meter dive. EMU won eight events on the day, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the top-ranked team mid-major team in the nation. The Eagles, who are ranked eighth in the CSCAA Mid-Major poll, will return to Oxford Feb. 24-27 to compete for the 2010 MAC title.

Eastern Michigan is back in action next week as they head to Athens, Ohio Saturday Feb. 6 to take on OU. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
