YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Coming off an idle week, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team is set for action Friday, Oct. 2, as the Eagles head to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational at 2 p.m. at Burke Golf Course.

This year's Notre Dame Invitational marks the 22nd year for the women's race, while the men's race enters its 54th year of existence, making it one of the oldest collegiate races in the nation.

So far this season, true freshman Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) has paced the Eagles in every single race. At the Michigan Open, Sept. 4, Calka was the first EMU harrier to cross the finish line, placing fifth overall with a time of 18:24.2. A week later at the 23rd Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational, Calka finished third overall with a time of 18:15 en route to Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week accolades. The true freshman won her first-ever collegiate race in EMU's last competition at the George Dales Invitational, taking first with a time of 21:49.26.

Closing the gap behind Calka so far in 2009 has been sophomore captain Rachel Hollinger-Janzen (Goshen, Ind.-Goshen) who has finished behind Calka in every race this season. At the Michigan Open, Hollinger-Janzen placed 12th with a time of 19:12.6. A week later at the Titan Invitational, Hollinger-Janzen helped the Eagles to a first place finish as a team with her time of 19:04, good for eighth overall. At the George Dales Invitational, Hollinger-Janzen had her best finish of the year when she took fourth with a time of 22:50.20.

After competing in the Notre Dame Invitational, the Eagles have another idle week before they send two squads out to separate meets, Oct. 17. The Eagles will travel several runners down the road to Bowling Green, Ohio for the Falcon Invitational, while other runners will head to Terra Haute, Ind. for the Pre-NCAA Meet.
