Men's Cross Country Wraps Up Action at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team wrapped up action this afternoon, Sept. 18, at the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational at Forest Akers East Golf Course.
Senior captain Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) paced the Eagles for the second race in-a-row, finishing fifth overall with a time of 24:58. Vollmar, the reigning Mid-American Conference Runner of the Week for men's cross country, ran a pace of 5:02 at the Spartan Invitational, his second top-five finish of the young season. Last week, Vollmar placed first overall at the Titan Invitational, running the fastest time in EMU men's cross country history.
"I was happy with our effort at the Spartan Invitational, considering our athletes have not completed lab and field tests and are racing tired from training,” said EMU head coach John Goodridge. “We now have a two week cycle devoted to training in preparation for the Notre Dame Invitational."
Redshirt freshman James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester) was the second EMU runner to cross the finish line, as he placed 12th overall with a time of 25:22.
Senior captain R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) finished 19th overall with a time of 25:37, while junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) placed 21st with a time of 25:39.
Former EMU individual champion Josh Karanja led the entire field of 218 runners, taking first with a time of 24:31.
The Eagles are idle until Oct. 2 when they head to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational.
