YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Four Eastern Michigan University women's golfers were named to the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-American Scholar Teams for Division I, as announced by the organization Wednesday, July 1. Among the 410 women's collegiate golfers recognized with this prestigious honor were EMU’s Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion), Lina Pasquali (Kendallville, Ind.-East Noble), Marjorie Thuot (Joliette, Quebec-Therese-Martin) and Stephany Fleet (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt).
A total of 410 women's collegiate golfers from Divisions I, II and III were recognized by the National Golf Coaches Association with this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent (Division I) or 66 percent (Division II & III) of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Peters earned her first NGCA recognition following her sophomore season as an Eagle. Peters, who majors in business, averaged 76.5 strokes per round, good for fifth best in the conference in 2008-09. She finished in the top 10 in six events, including capturing medalist honors at the Zippy Invitational with a 220 (71-73-76). She also tied for third place at the EKU Spring Invitational with a 230 (78-75-77) and fourth at the Morehead State Spring Kick-off with a 54 hole total of 228 (75-79-74). Peters posted of record of 667-102 this season and is 1079-371 in her brief two-year career.
Pasquali picked up her first NGCA honor as a dietetics major. The Kendallville, Ind. native played in 16 rounds during the 2008-09 campaign, posting an average of 84.9 stokes per round. She tied for 29th at the Braveheart Classic and at the MSU Spring Kick-off. Her lowest round of the season was an 81 on two separate occasions.
Thuot recorded here third consecutive NGCA accolade with a perfect 4.00 GPA as a marketing major. She played in all 10 tournaments during the 2008-09 season. In 27 rounds Thuot averaged 80.1 strokes per round, including firing a season best 77 on four separate 18 at the MSU Spring Kick-Off. Thuot also finished 19th at the Mid-American Conference Championship with a 329 (88-81-80-80).
Fleet, who boasts a 3.84 GPA in marketing, picked her third consecutive NGCA distinction. The Dewitt, Mich. native played in all 10 tournaments this year, posting an average of 75.3 strokes in 27 rounds. The mark led the team and ranked third in the conference. She finished in the top five in nine events, including a runner-up showing at the UALR Women’s Golf Classic and at the EKU Spring Invitational. Fleet ranked second in the nation in total short game, according to GolfStat.com and finished with the second lowest single-season average in school-history.
Following a school-best finish with a runner-up showing at the 2009 MAC Women's Golf Championship, EMU picked a trio of postseason awards to cap a stellar 2008-09 campaign. Fleet was named to the all-tournament team and first team All-MAC squad. Peters also garnered first team All-MAC accolades for her efforts, while senior Courtney Aili (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) was selected to the all-tournament team and second team All-MAC.
EMU's second-place finish equaled the mark set by the 2003, 2007 and the 2008 squads. In 2003, the Green and White recorded a 925 at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio. The 2007 team posted a 1,252 at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, while the 2008 Eagles finished as the runner-up with 1,228 at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind.
