LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Junior Gerald Gersham (Southfield, Mich.-Southfield) tossed a lifetime-best mark of 59-09.75 on his fifth overall throw of the shot put at the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, May 29, at the University of Louisville’s Cardinal Park. With his throw, he earned the fourth of five automatic qualifying spots to the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., June 10-13, as well as NCAA All-Region accolades. In addition, his improvement puts him fourth overall in EMU school history.
In other action on the track, senior Neal Naughton (Walled Lake, Mich.-Western) competed in the first of two heats in the preliminaries of the 1,500-meter run. He finished 11th in his heat, 22nd overall, clocking in a time of 4:00.82.
In the high jump, Xavier Clais (Paris, France) cleared the first two heights, finishing 13th with a mark of 6-10.25.
The Eagles will have several more athletes competing in finals on Saturday, May 30. First up for EMU will be David Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic), Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean) and Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) who will represent the Green and White in the steeplechase at 6:40 p.m. The second and final event for the Eagles will be the 4x400-meter relay team of Kevin Lanier (White Lake, Mich.-Lakeland), Ackeem Forde (Haynesville, Barbados-Cambridge & Parry), Kyle Fortin (Fairview, Mich.-Fairview-CMU) and Nate Blackwell (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Central) who will look to vie for a trip to Fayetteville at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.
