Sean Clair leads the way with second place finish

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEAGLES.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team competed in its final Open tournament of the 2009-10 season Sunday, Dec. 13, at the annual Cleveland State Open. Seven Eagles earned top six finishes in the unattached event, including senior Sean Clair (Turtlecreek, Pa.-Plum), who took runner-up honors at 133 lbs.
Clair was victorious in his first three matches, having won two by decision and one by major decision. In the final round, however, Clair was bested by Jan Ulinski of Findlay University, 6-3. The 3-1 performance improves Clair's season record to 9-7.
A pair of EMU wrestlers, freshman Alex Ortman (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) and sophomore Wes Schroeder (Manitou Beach, Mich.-Addison), placed third in their respective weight classes. Ortman won six consecutive matches following an opening round setback at 165 lbs., which included a 7-2 victory over Kyle Mosier of Purdue University in the deciding third place bout. Ortman is now 7-4 on the season.
Schroeder went 4-1 in the heavyweight division with four decisions including a 1-0 shutout of Edinboro University's Michael Horton in the third place match. His season record improves to 10-7.
True freshman Jared Germaine (Saginaw, Mich.-Saginaw Valley) and sophomore Chris Eggert (Dundee, Mich.-Dundee) each posted fourth place performances Sunday. Germaine lost his opening match at 125 lbs. to Conor Beebe of Central Michigan University, but then rattled-off five straight wins to punch his ticket to the third place bout, where he would again suffer a defeat at the hands of Beebe. A 5-2 tournament record puts Germaine at 10-4 on the season.
Eggert claimed victory in four straight matches following an opening round setback at 174 lbs., but was bested in the third place match by Peter Capone of Ohio State University. He is now 8-6 on the season.
Finally, true freshman Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford) and sophomore Matt Pettigrew (St. John's, Mich.-St. John's) earned sixth place finishes at 184 lbs. and heavyweight, respectively. Whitenburg won his first two matches via decision and major decision before dropping his final three matches. A 2-3 tournament record puts his season mark at 8-4.
Pettigrew posted a 3-3 record over six matches, including a pin of Leon White at the seven minute mark. He is now 5-7 on the season.
The Eagles will be back in action Sunday, Dec. 20, when they head to Reno, Nev., for the Reno Tournament of Champions. A total of 13 EMU grapplers will be competing in the event.
