Wade and Whitenburg Lead Eagles at 18th Annual EMU Open

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The 2009-10 season officially got underway for the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team here Saturday, Nov. 7, at Bowen Field House, with the 18th Annual EMU Open. The Eagles were led by senior David Wade (Beavercreek, Ohio-Beavercreek) and freshman Nick Whitenburg (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford), who each notched second place honors in their respective weight classes.

Wade battled his way through the first three rounds in the heavyweight class of the open division with a trio of decisions. In the finals, Wade was edged by Ed Phillips from the University of Michigan, 3-1.

In his collegiate debut, Whitenburg took second place at 184 lbs. in the freshman and sophomore division, which included two decisions and a 13-5 major decision over Josh Crawford of Olivet College.

Other top-three finshers in the open division included senior Chris Jenkins (Tecumseh, Mich.-Tecumseh), whose biggest victory of the day came against nationally ranked Nikko Triggas from Ohio State University, 10-9. Jenkins placed third at 125 lbs. Junior Andrew Novak (New Boston, Mich.-Huron) earned thrid place honors at 133 lbs. thanks to a 4-1 performance which included a pin, a major decision and two decisions.

In the freshman and sophomore bracket, freshman Mike LeHolm (Jackson, Mich.-Jackson Northwest) battled back from an opening round setback with six straight victories to take third place at 141 lbs. LeHolm managed two falls, two major decisions and two decisions in his first competition as a member of the EMU squad.

Freshman Phillip Joseph (Lapeer, Mich.-Lapeer East) posted a 6-2 record for a fourth place finish at 174 lbs. Joseph won five consecutive matches by way of five decisions and a major decision. Joseph was edged by Drae Cox from Lindenwood University, 7-4, in the third place match.

The Eagles will kick-off dual competition Saturday, Nov. 14, when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals. The Green and White will square-off against Northern Iowa University and St. Cloud University.
