Men's Cross Country Takes Ninth at Great Lakes Regional

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team wrapped up action Saturday afternoon, Nov. 14, at the 2009 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, as the Eagles finished ninth as a team with 232 points in the 10,000-meter event.

Finishing in the top 25 and earning All-Region honors was senior captain Curtis Vollmar (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and true freshman Terefe Ejigu (Mount Cook, Wellington-Wellington-New Zealand), who finished 17th and 25th, respectively.

The University of Wisconsin took home the Great Lakes Regional title, placing two in the top five to finish with just 62 points.

The Eagles placed second among all Mid-American Conference schools, as the MAC champions from Kent State University placed sixth with 192 points. The Eagles finished second among Michigan schools, as Michigan State University took runner-up with 128 points. The Eagles bested Washtenaw County rival the University of Michigan by one spot, as the Wolverines took 10th with 259 points. 

Like he’s done in every other meet this season, Vollmar paced the Eagles on the day, as he placed 17th overall with a time of 31:28.51 (5:05 pace).

Ejigu had a stellar performance in his first ever Great Lakes Regional, earning All-Region accolades with a time of 31:49.98 (5:08 pace).

Senior captain R.P. White (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) and sophomore Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio-Northview) were the next two EMU harriers to cross the finish line, as the pair finished 42nd and 72nd, respectively.

Not far behind was junior Matt Hammersmith (Wolcottville, Mich.-Prairie Heights), who placed 76th with a time of 32:59.39.

Sophomore Josh Brent (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary’s Catholic Central-St. Francis) and redshirt freshman James Hughes (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester) were the next pair of EMU harriers to cross the finish line, as they placed 130th and 134th, respectively.
