YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Steady rain and sloppy field conditions played a major role as the Eagles fell to Miami University, 1-0, in Mid-American Conference play at Scicluna Field Friday, Oct. 9.

Both squads played as even as any two teams could play, except for Miami’s goal in the 30th minute. Joe Zwingelberg took the ball on the left edge and was able to take advantage of the slippery conditions. In crossing over towards the center of the field, two Eagle defenders slipped and fell in trying to reverse their course and it left Zwingelberg with a wide open opportunity.

Her shot to the far right post left EMU goalkeeper, Monique Budani, little chance to make a play. It was Zwingelberg’s first goal of the season. Despite out-shooting the Redhawks 20-18, nine of which landed on goal for the Eagles, none were able to find the back of the net. A lot of credit went to Miami keeper, Krista Pace, who answered the call each time, making nine saves for her fourth shutout of the season.

Eastern’s Carissa Wilson led the team in shots with six while Paige Sheridan recorded four. The Eagles missed several opportunities late as heavy legs from playing on the muddy turf took a toll.

The Eagles’ record drops to 6-3-4 overall, 2-1-2 in the MAC while Miami, with its third straight win, pushes its record to 7-4-1, 3-1-1 in league play. Eastern Michigan will host Ball State (4-8-0, 2-3-0 MAC) Sunday, Oct. 11. The Cardinals are coming off a 3-0 loss to Central Michigan. Kickoff between the Eagles and Cardinals is slated for 1 p.m.
