FOR THE 33RD TIME: The 2008-09 season marks the 33rd season of Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving. The program was started in 1976 under head Mike Cook with the Eagles going 5-3-1 in the inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 40-13 overall record and a 28-9 MAC mark in four years.
MIAMI HEADS TO YPSILANTI FOR CONFERENCE MEET: The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team looks to improve its Mid-American Conference record to 5-1 when Miami University comes to Jones Natatorium, Saturday, Jan. 31. The RedHawks are currently in first place in the conference with a perfect 5-0 mark and are the No. 1 team in the Division I Mid-Major poll. EMU sits in second place at 4-1, with its only conference loss coming against Toledo. Last year, Eastern Michigan posted a 159-141 win over the RedHawks in the last meet of the regular season.
CONFERENCE ACTION RETURNS: After going over two months in between conference meets, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team has returned to conference action, as the Eagles' last three meets are all against MAC foes. EMU started the stretch by traveling to Ball State University, picking up a win against the Cardinals. The Eagles have now won the past five meets against BSU, last falling to the Cardinals during the 2002-03 season. EMU hosts Miami (Jan. 31) and Ohio (Feb. 7) before heading to Bowling Green, Ohio for the MAC Championships (Feb. 26-March 1).
LAST TIME OUT: EMU went 2-0 on the weekend, first defeating Wayne State, 155-82 at Jones Natatorium. The Warriors came into the meet as the No. 1 team in Division II, but the Eagles dropped only three events on the evening to come away with the victory. Eastern then headed to Muncie, Ind. to take on the Ball State Cardinals for its first MAC action since November. The Eagles dominated BSU, coming away with a 177.5-120.5 win to push their conference mark to 4-1.
ANOTHER RANKED TEAM AWAITS: Since the calendar turned to 2009, the Eagles have been taking on some tougher competition. EMU dropped a close, 144-155 decision at Oakland (Jan. 10), the No. 7 team in Mid-Major Division I swimming and diving. Eastern then dominated Wayne State (Jan. 23), the No. 1 team in Division II. The Eagles' final two conference opponents are both ranked as well. First up is Miami University, currently ranked as the No. 1 team in Mid-Major Division I swimming. Next weekend, EMU returns to Jones Natatorium for the final time this season to host Ohio University, currently the No. 9 ranked team according to CollegeSwimming.com.
