Detroit Mumford product to join EMU for 2008-09 campaign

YPSILANTI, Mich. – Eastern Michigan University head women’s basketball coach AnnMarie Gilbert has announced that Tavelyn James from Detroit Mumford High School has signed a National Letter of Intent and will enroll at EMU beginning this fall.

James, a 5-foot-7 guard, averaged 23.2 points, 4.4 steals, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game as a senior last year for the Mustangs. Her 23.2 point per game ranked her as the top scorer in the Detroit Public School League and the second leading scorer in the state of Michigan. Additionally, her per game point total made her one of the top 100 most prolific scorers in the entire nation. For her efforts, James was named honorable mention All-State along with garnering All-Metro and All-PSL accolades.

"Tavelyn is a well rounded young lady who excels in the classroom as well as on the court," said Gilbert. "She maintains a 3.8 GPA and I am very excited to have her join our program. Tavelyn is a very athletic combo guard who can score and run the point. She was the PSL’s leading scorer and will add to both our offensive and defensive attack."

James joins Tymeshe Gibson (Kansas City, Mo.-Park Hill South), Paige Redditt (Belton, Mo.-Belton) and Brittany Simmons (Zion, Ill.-Benton) who have already signed national letters of intent to join EMU next season.

In 2007-08, Eastern Michigan posted a 17-12 overall record and 11-5 mark in Mid-American Conference play en route to program’s third MAC West Division title in the last five seasons. First-year head coach AnnMarie Gilbert became just the fourth coach in MAC history to win a title in their first season along with setting the school-record for most wins by a rookie head coach.
