Kurt Anderson is entering his fifth year at EMU and his second as the running game coordinator/offensive line coach.
The 34-year-old Anderson joined EMU’s staff in April of 2008 as tight ends coach before shifting to the offensive line the past two seasons.
The Eagles’ ground attack was extremely effective during the 2011 campaign, Eastern Michigan rushed for 2,620 yards and 16 touchdowns on 575 carries for the 16th-best ground attack in the nation. The total was the second most in program history trailing only the 1987 team that captured the Mid-American Conference title by running the ball 610 times for a total of 2,701 yards.
The Eagles have rushed for more than 2,000 yards in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in school history. Last season, EMU finished with 2,080 yards for a two-year combined total of 4,700 yards. The 1986 club ran for 2,042 yards and it was followed up by the record-setting total in 1987.
Prior to being hired at EMU, Anderson was a graduate assistant at the University of Michigan for two seasons. While on the Michigan football staff, Anderson spent the 2007 season as a graduate assistant coach for the offensive line, working with line coach Andy Moeller, now with the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL. Anderson helped develop All-American offensive tackle and overall No. 1 NFL draft selection Jake Long along with All-Big Ten offensive lineman Adam Kraus. In 2006, Anderson was a defensive quality control graduate assistant coach and worked with defensive line coach Steve Stripling. While on that side of the football, Anderson helped develop current NFL players Lamar Woodley and Alan Branch.
Prior to his stint at Michigan, Anderson was an assistant coach at Indiana State where he worked with the offensive tackles and tight ends.
As a collegian, Anderson was an outstanding player before graduating from the University of Michigan in 2001 with a degree in sport management and communications from the Division of Kinesiology. He was a two-year letterman on the offensive line (2000-01) for the Wolverines and was the starting offensive center. He received the Hugh R. Rader Jr. Memorial Award as the team’s top offensive lineman and was selected All-Big Ten honorable mention by the conference coaches following the 2001 season. He is the brother of former Wolverine All-American and Butkus Award winning linebacker Erick Anderson.
Anderson has been involved in seven post-season Bowl games, including five as a player and two as a coach. He was a member of the 1998 Michigan squad that won the Rose Bowl on the way to a national championship. He was also a player in the 1999 Citrus Bowl, the 2000 Orange bowl, the 2001 and 2002 Citrus Bowls and was on the coaching staff for the 2007 Rose Bowl and the 2008 Capital One Bowl.
After graduating in 2001, Anderson was a rookie free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in 2002.
Anderson and his wife, Jennifer (Costales) reside in Ypsilanti with their sons, Hawken and Torin, and daughter, Dagny.
